What is coaching?

“Coaching is a collaborative, solution-focused results-oriented and systematic process in which the coach facilitates the enhancement of work performance, life experience, self-directed learning and personal growth of the coachee” (Association for Coaching, 2015)

There are different applications of coaching in education. This programme focuses on coaching to enhance professional practice: To support performance, development and wellbeing.

Coaching is collaborative, supports individual autonomy, facilitative, future-focused and non-judgemental.

What can you expect from a coaching session?

The aim of this programme is for SENCos is to develop their holistic assessment skills.

Coaching sessions provide support to enhance your performance as well as your coping, resilience and wellbeing. Coaching sessions will help develop your practice to achieve specific goals and you will be invited to write your own action plans at the end of sessions.

 

Coaching sessions will help you to:

Understand the problem situation

Examine systemic aspects 

Develop critical understanding

Consider underlying personal dimensions

Create an action plan

Evaluate outcomes and processes

 

 

Responsibilities of the coach

To establish a safe enough environment to explore practice issues

To help explore and clarify thinking and feeling underlying practice

To give clear feedback

To share information, experience and skills appropriately

To challenge practice that is considered unethical or incompetent

To confront personal and professional blocks

Responsibilities as coachee

To identify practice issues which need exploring

To become increasingly able to share these issues freely

To identify and communicate the kind of interventions that are useful

To be open to feedback

To notice the need to justify, explain or defend before listening to feedback
